Madagascar is not a country coffee lovers usually think to look for. But botanically, it may be the most important coffee country on Earth. While the island barely registers on global export charts, it is home to one of the largest concentrations of wild coffee species found anywhere — a genetic reservoir that scientists are only beginning to understand.

Madagascar's Coffee Story — Robusta First, Arabica Second

Coffee arrived in Madagascar from Réunion (once called Bourbon Island), brought by French colonists who planted it alongside vanilla, clove, and sugar on plantations along the island's humid eastern coast. Production stayed modest through the early colonial period — coffee historian William Ukers described Madagascar's exports as insignificant as late as 1930, well behind the East African producers of the era. Real growth came later, as colonial administrators expanded plantations through the mid-20th century.

Production has since declined steadily for decades, driven by aging, unproductive tree stock, minimal reinvestment in farms, and competition from more lucrative cash crops — vanilla and cloves in particular, both of which have commanded far higher prices on the world market in recent years. A serious downturn in the coffee sector in the late 1990s, tied to widespread deforestation, accelerated the slide.

Today, Madagascar's commercial coffee is overwhelmingly Robusta — by most industry estimates, somewhere around 95 to 98 percent of production. Arabica survives only in small highland pockets. Madagascar was the world's 23rd-largest coffee producer in 2023, with output of 49,344 tonnes, according to FAOSTAT.

Where Coffee Grows in Madagascar

The Eastern Escarpment (Robusta heartland)

Nearly all of Madagascar's commercial coffee grows along the low-altitude, rain-soaked eastern escarpment — the humid belt that catches moisture rolling in off the Indian Ocean. The Atsinanana region around the port city of Toamasina is the commercial center of this belt, with further plantings on Nosy Be Island to the northwest and in Atsimo-Andrefana in the southwest. Robusta thrives here at low elevations, generally under 800 meters (2,600 feet), where the heat and consistent rainfall suit Coffea canephora far better than the more temperamental Arabica. The Central Highlands (Arabica pockets)

Madagascar's small Arabica production is concentrated inland, in the cooler central highlands around Haute-Matsiatra (home to the city of Fianarantsoa) and Amoron'i Mania, near Antsirabe. Altitudes here climb toward 1,000–1,600 meters (3,300–5,200 feet) — still modest by East African Arabica standards, but enough to slow cherry maturation and support more delicate flavor development. Typica, Bourbon, and Catimor are the varieties most commonly found. A smaller amount of Arabica is also grown further north, around Mahajanga.

What Makes Madagascar Coffee Different

Malagasy coffee rarely appears as a single-origin offering outside the island, which makes it something of a blind spot even for well-traveled coffee drinkers. Both natural and washed processing are used, depending on the region and the individual farm's access to water and infrastructure — natural processing is more common along the drier stretches of the east coast, while washed lots tend to come from farms with better water access in the highlands.

What ties Madagascar's coffee together isn't a single house style — it's geographic isolation. The island split from mainland Africa roughly 160 million years ago and has been evolving in isolation ever since, which is exactly why its coffee genetics look nothing like anywhere else. Coffea Bonnieri and Madagascar's Wild Coffee Species

Here is the fact that separates Madagascar from every other coffee origin on this list: of roughly 130 known Coffea species worldwide, around 60 are found only in Madagascar — most of them wild, undomesticated, and virtually unknown outside botanical research circles. Coffea bonnieri, first described by the French botanist Dubard, is one of them: a member of the "Mascarocoffea" group, a clade of coffee species endemic to Madagascar and the nearby Mascarene islands, and currently listed as endangered.

The genuinely startling part is caffeine — or the lack of it. According to Dr. Eva Nathalie Raharimalala, who heads the coffee research program at FOFIFA, Madagascar's national agricultural research center, all 61 of the island's endemic Coffea species produce naturally low or no caffeine at all — a trait almost never seen in the two species (Arabica and Robusta) that supply nearly all the coffee the world drinks. That finding is backed by decades of work from Kew Gardens and France's Institute of Research for Development (IRD), both long-time research partners on Madagascar's wild coffee genetics.

Madagascar's national agricultural research center, FOFIFA, maintains a living collection of dozens of these species at its Kianjavato station, working with IRD and international partners on breeding programs aimed at crossing wild Malagasy genetics into commercial coffee — the long-term goal being naturally decaffeinated coffee, and greater disease resistance, without relying on chemical decaffeination or genetic modification. It's slow, unglamorous conservation work, and it may end up mattering more to coffee's future than anything happening on a commercial Robusta estate today. Kew Gardens estimates that 60 percent of the world's wild coffee species are threatened with extinction, driven mainly by deforestation and habitat loss. Madagascar's own species fare even worse: the same underlying Kew research puts the figure for wild coffee species found in Madagascar and the wider Indian Ocean region at more than 71 percent — among the highest extinction risk of any coffee-growing region on Earth.

Challenges Facing Madagascar's Coffee Industry

Madagascar's commercial coffee sector faces a familiar set of pressures, compounded by the island's particular economic and ecological circumstances. Many Robusta trees planted during the colonial era are now old and past peak productivity, and farmers have little financial incentive to replant when vanilla, cloves, and other export crops offer better returns for the same land and labor. Deforestation — driven partly by slash-and-burn agriculture and partly by the same economic pressures pushing farmers toward other crops — threatens not just future coffee land but the wild habitats where Madagascar's endemic Coffea species survive. Add a changing climate, which is already shifting rainfall patterns along the eastern escarpment, and it's a sector under pressure from more directions than most.

What Does Madagascar Coffee Taste Like?

Commercial Malagasy Robusta tends toward the profile you'd expect from the species: full-bodied, low in acidity, with earthy, woody, sometimes tobacco-like notes and a bittersweet finish — solid, unfussy coffee built for blends and instant coffee rather than delicate pour-overs. The highland Arabica is a different animal entirely: brighter acidity, and depending on the specific farm and processing, notes that swing from citrus and stone fruit to floral and toffee-like sweetness, closer in character to other East African Arabica than to its own island's Robusta.

If you do come across single-origin Madagascar coffee — most likely from a specialty roaster working directly with a highland Arabica producer around Fianarantsoa or Antsirabe — it's worth trying precisely because so few people have.
